Gaining a Deeper Understanding of the New Testament — 20150322

pantocratorI have been considering the Gospel of John in this article. While few verbal   parallels are found between John’s gospel and the three Synoptics, the few that exist could be accounted for if both John and the synoptic authors knew some of the same oral   tradition. But whether or not John knew any of the other gospels, he went his own way. His gospel is very different. The true   difference between John’s gospel and the synoptics was already recognized in Christian antiquity. Around the year 200, an early Christian named Clement of Alexandria described it as a spiritual gospel. He was probably not the first to notice, but the first whose comments have survived. Exactly what Clement meant, beyond naming   a difference, is not clear. The most obvious meaning is that John’s story, that is his language, is more symbolic than literal and factual. Such is also the conclusion of mainstream modern, biblical scholarship.

Some who think of history as the facts, as what happened, dismiss John because his story is not presented as straightforwardly factual. They are right to regard John as less historical in this sense. But to dismiss or set John aside would be a mistake. John is a remarkable testimony to what Jesus had become in the early Christian milieu in which the gospel was written. Its language is rich and powerful and it has shaped Christianity ever since.

Mainline scholars commonly date John around the year 90. John, however, has earlier and later layers. The clearest example is that the gospel seems to end twice – once at the end of chapter 20 and again at the end of chapter 21. The most plausible explanation is that John 21 was added to a first edition that ended with John 20. Scholars have also argued that the author may have had second thoughts about what he wanted to share. Despite uncertainty about what might be earlier and what is likely later, there is a strong consensus that the form in which we have John came from the decade of the 90s. It tells us how Jesus was spoken of in a Christian community near the end of the first century. It does not tell us very much about how Jesus himself spoke.

The narrative has been organized and adapted to serve the evangelist’s theological purposes. In the next installment I shall share what some scholars identify as the theological purposes of John’s Gospel.

Hopefully this prepares us for Easter!

A Prayer-A Day for the Great Fast SUNDAY, MARCH 22nd

Almighty and everlasting God, I know that the Church called me, this past week, to reflect upon the Holy Cross of Jesus, the Christ. I am deeply thankful for the insights You have given me about the meaning of the Cross. I ask You to help me imitate Jesus in the way that I deal with the crosses that life presents to me. I know that if I can deal with life’s sufferings as He did that I will grow in my likeness of You. Help me to truly desire, since I have been created in Your image, to work with all of my strength to become a person in the likeness of Jesus, Who is Your image. Help me to imitate Him. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen

A Prayer-A Day for the Great Fast SATURDAY, MARCH 21st

Lord Jesus Christ, I truly believe that You voluntarily embraced the suffering of Your crucifixion to reveal to me how to respond to the challenges of life. Your way of living leads to a deeper   understanding of the meaning of life. Help me to imitate You as I deal with the challenges of my life. I know that if I imitate the way You lived that I will grow to be more like You, my redeemer and my God. Help me to have the courage, as You did, to embrace the crosses that are given to me in life. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen.

A Prayer-A Day for the Great Fast FRIDAY, MARCH 20th

Heavenly Father, when I look upon the Cross of Your Beloved Son, I realize the great love You have for me and all humankind. Help me to dare to believe that You love us so much that You became incarnate in the Person of Your Son so that You might be able to show us in a very concrete way how to deal with the physical and psychological suffering that is just a part of life. Your Son’s courageous acceptance of His suffering inspires me to have the courage to face the sufferings that come into my life. The only words that I can offer to You is thank you. Help me carry my cross. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen.

A Prayer-A Day for the Great Fast THURSDAY, MARCH 19th

O Jesus Christ, I truly believe and profess that You are truly God incarnate Who came into our world for the sake of revealing to us how we must live in order to come into deeper union with You. I know and believe that this is the true meaning of life. For salvation is to know You, my Triune God, as the source of my life, as revealed through the Person of Jesus. I beg You to help me grow more convinced of this truth and to do all in my power to completely embrace the Jesus Way of Living. He is the Person I desire to imitate. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen

A Prayer-A Day for the Great Fast WEDNESDAY, MARCH 18th

O loving Lord, as I think again about Your crucifixion and death, help me to realize that it is necessary for me to voluntarily embrace life’s challenges so that I may truly come to a deeper   understanding of life’s purpose. Help me to see in Your cross, the way to my own salvation, knowing that it is the way that I live my life and accept the crosses of life that will lead me to a deeper union with You. Help me to realize that the crosses of my life, if willingly accepted with nobility and courage, can only lead to greater union with You. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen

A Prayer-A Day for the Great Fast TUESDAY, MARCH 17th

O my most living Lord, I beg Your help in carrying the crosses that are a part of my life. Help me to never become bitter at the challenges that life gives me but to deal with these challenges with the same type of nobility and courage You had in your crucifixion and death. Help me not to complain about life’s challenges but, like You, to be silent and prayerful, only asking our Father for His divine help. As I carry the crosses which come to my life, help me to realize that they are designed with love to help me spiritually grow. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen.

A Prayer-A Day for the Great Fast MONDAY, MARCH 16th

O Christ our true God, as I look upon Your Holy Cross, I am reminded of the great love you have for me and all humankind. As I behold Your Cross I know that You know well the struggles humans face in life. You faced these same struggles Yourself, and many more, so that I might understand how to deal with the struggles that life brings to me. Help me to see and accept life’s struggles as loving opportunities to grow in my hope and trust in You. Help me to deal with the struggles of my life as You did. Help me to carry my cross behind You. As I request Your help, O God, I offer my praise to You, Who I know to be Father, Son and Holy Spirit, not only now but forever and ever. Amen.
